Modern Woman in Search of Soul looks closely at how certain cultural representations are embedded in the female body. Streamed live, the performers solicit and mobilize the in-theatre and online audiences in a variety of ways to demonstrate the violence the representations play upon the female body. Rather than subduing or mediating the mechanism of representation, the work aims to expose and arrest it.
Modern Woman premiered at The Citadel (Toronto, ON), June 6, 2018, and has since played in The Fluid Fest (Calgary, AB) and on small screens in the U.S., Russia, Laos, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Guyana, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chili, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru and Colombia.
“… Ivanochko’s works are deeply psychological and present the problems we have to grapple with when, through thought and language, we classify and objectify living, feeling bodies.” – Robert Kingsbury, The Dance Current
